Some things are better left unsaid
If you think Santa Claus does not exist, you should keep that knowledge to yourself.
A female teacher at Blackshaw Lane Primary School in England has been fired because she revealed to her 7 year-old pupils that Santa Claus doesn’t exist. The children were becoming more and more rowdy while talking about Christmas, the teacher turned angry and declared : “It’s your parents who leave out presents on Christmas Day.” The effect was immediate, the children burst out into tears and shut up for the rest of the day.
Actually, the debate concerning Santa Claus animates schoolyards in Western countries every year. The Christmas figure is said to come from the hagiographical tales of Saint Nicholas who lived in the 4th century, but the place where he lives is a burning issue. Some pretend that he lives in Lapland, others swear that they saw him in the North Pole, and those who want to make sure that they will receive the gifts they expect send him letters directly to the sky.
There is always a malicious child who thinks he is more clever than the others and who feels powerful by revealing the truth about Santa. But when it comes from a crual adult, and above all from a teacher, reactions burst forth. “I found it shocking, she has done it maliciously”, the father of one of the pupils said. “The whole family was outraged that a teacher took it upon herself to say this”, Amanda Robinson, a mother of a 7 year-old, added.
To protect their beloved children, adults outdo the others with imagination. The headmistress of the school apologized and parents tried to keep Christmas magic vivid. “One of the permanent teachers did a very good job of telling the children that this was a mistake and ‘of course’ Santa is real.”, Ms Robinson explained. “We told our son that she did not believe in Santa because of her religion and he’s fine now”, another parent reassured.
The crisis is over. Everything goes back to normal. For this year at least.
